  1. 1836-1910. US painter and lithographer, known
  2. for his seascapes, both oils and
  3. watercolours, which date from the 1880s and
  4. 1890s. Homer, born in Boston, made his
  5. reputation as a realist painter with
  6. Prisoners from the Front 1866 (Metropolitan
  7. Museum of Art, New York), recording miseries
  8. of the American Civil War. After a visit to
  9. Paris he turned to lighter subjects, studies
  10. of country life, which reflect early
  11. Impressionist influence. He stayed in Britain
  12. for two years, then settled in Maine, but
  13. continued to travel to Canada, the West
  14. Indies, and elsewhere.
